Description

This interactive installation is based on Douglas Davis’ writing The Work of Art in the Age of Digital Reproduction. The author explores ideas proposed by Walter Benjamin, such aura and authorship of art pieces. In this installation, I focus on Davis’ argument that aura maintains in the digital age with multiple authorship. Considering typography and possiblilities of interactions, I explore ways to Processing.

In order to show my opinion to author’s writing, I use:
1.    Different color to show different voices
2.    Anchored center cloud to show established author’s voice. Moving trail of words with mouse to show my/reader’s voice.
3.    Free floating, shaking characters to show the changing and active nature of thoughts
4.    Increasing of font size of both word cloud to show they strengthen each other
5.    Gradually changing of similarity in color to show agreement

The ability to reproduce these systems is integral to deeply-rooted cultural notions regarding memory, power, history, the nation-state, personal identity, media and definitions of authority and knowledge.

Reflection

The iterative process give me chance to explore wide range of effects given media and content can achieve. This project also encouraged to do more user test as each user may react differently to the same instruction and setup. If I have more time, I would carry out more tests regarding the details of interaction design. For instance, what is the most oftenly used key users tend to press when they start a game? How long do most users hold the key to wait for revealation?
